Week 2 of Dezi-ness

Dezi knows her name! She's a quick one. Dezi's been introduced to the clicker, and with that, her name was a piece of cake. Followed by 'sit,' 'down,' and 'wave.' The wave is so stinking cute. If I ever figure out how to successfully edit videos, I will post this. Anyone else feel like there's just not enough time in the day? :)

This week, I also got out my tippy board and some tunnels for her to play with in the house. She came with experience, and it showed. The tunnel would roll, but she didn't care, she would just rip and roar through it. (Or chill, like in the picture.)

Dezi likes to play in her water dish, then act like nothing happened :)
A June Bug!!

Friday night, Maya and Dezi went to agility open run-thrus at Goose Creek Dog Sports. Dezi socialized and met some new friends. I forgot my camera, so please check out The Brew Brothers blog for more.

And we ended the week with Maya and Dezi playing a game of chase! They are finally playing together!

First Week with Dezi

Once we were home, the puppy felt comfortable exploring everything right away! (See picture) The other dogs left her alone, and she didn't pester them.

She had her first vet visit with Dr. McGregor. When I made her appointment, they asked what breed she was... A what?!? :) They printed out breed info so they would be ready for us! The office staff and vet all loved "puppy." They held, carried, and fussed all over her.

I really stress over naming a new pup. After 'trying on' many names, I kept going back to Dezi. Dezi just fits her. I found from one of those baby name websites that it means "longing for," which made it even more appropriate.  My little Dezi.

Playing in the hotel room
Saturday morning, we walked outside to potty the dogs at the hotel - Penny and Cal were setup outside with the puppies in an exercise pen. We started talking and, of course, playing with the 12 week old puppies. One thing lead to another, and I was asked if I was ready for a puppy! Um, yes!?! Wasn't expecting to come home with a puppy, and Penny wasn't necessarily ready to say goodbye - I think one of the deciding factors was the distance we live apart from one another.... Well, and the fact that Penny at sometime saw Jason coo, cuddle, and kiss Chance (he does this all the time) - as pointed out, he's a sucker. :)

"Jazz" was handed over to us after some legalities. We took her back to our room with us, still in a little bit of shock, and got ready to come home to Kentucky.

She slept the entire trip home. And, I was definitely in love!

Time to puppy proof the house! And decide what to call "Jazz."

Jason and I drove to Dundee, Michigan for the 2012 Portuguese Podengo Pequeno National Specialty. We went with two goals: 1) meet Penny, whom I'd been communicating with about her litter; 2) meet more of the breed and the people. The puppies were not going to be there, but Penny later decided to bring them. Yay!

The specialty was supposed to be outdoors, but with temps nearing 100, they were able to move it into a very tiny, cooled building. Beautiful dogs abound. I was enlisted to help Penny hold her 2 PPPs as she prepared. I felt a little out of place, not knowing what all was going on around me, but Penny and others were so friendly and helpful.

The puppies were sound asleep through all the chaos. When the show was done, the puppies were ready to be taken out for potty and playtime. I followed... eagerly.

A quick (or not-so-much) history

On April 17, 2012 a litter of Portuguese Podengo Pequeno puppies was born at Podengos da Floresta in New Hampshire. Little did I know, one of these puppies would become my own.

I had been interested in PPP's since the 90's when I saw a picture in a dog breed book that my parents bought me. At that time, when I searched the internet - all websites I found were not in English. I moved on.

Maya came into my life in 2005 - I already had Star and Chance - all Chihuahuas. In March 2006, I watched my first agility runs at the Louisville Cluster Dog Show. I was fascinated, all sizes of dogs competed from the wee tiny to Great Danes. I thought, I want to do this! And Maya was a spunky, agile pup. We trained and learned together. We have became a great team.
Star

In 2010, my fiancee moved in with his Min Pin, Lili. She was from "the wilds" as one of my friends told me. Early 2011, my beloved Star passed away. That was a hard pill for me to swallow. I began working with Lili more, in hopes to turn her into an agility dog. She's sharp and knows all the basics (she's excellent at weaves), but she stresses at trials. I'm lucky to get her to do one obstacle. *sigh*

It was time to add a new puppy to the mix. PPP's entered my mind again when AKC made them eligible to compete in the Misc Class in 2011. Then, one of my agility trial friends, Kim, got a PPP. I loved Chama. I wanted a scruffy wire coat one. The search began, the few breeders I talked to did not have litters "in the makings." Luckily, I had mentioned to Kim my interest in the breed. She messaged me about the litter at Podengos da Floresta. I started communicating with the breeder, Penny, and through the photos, videos, etc., I was falling in love...
